Some have argued that the time has come for the watchers to climb down from the walls, that Paradise is secure - indeed, that Paradise is diminished by our very presence. How can we claim to live in an age of freedom and enlightenment, they ask, when our planets crawl with armed troops, when our skies are filled with ships of war so formidable not even the stars themselves are immune to their wrath. They point to our guns, our bombs, our anachronistic uniforms, our strange traditions, our rigid hierarchy and they ask what relevance these things have in a universe at peace with itself.

And some in the High Guard have argued that these people deserve to reap what they sow. That perhaps the dissolution of the High Guard, like a wish made to an angry djinn, will show them just how tenuous their Paradise really is. They point to the universities, the research centers, the museums, the Conclave and they call them luxuries, taken for granted by an ungrateful populace. They ask how long these things could abide without the strength of the High Guard to ensure their survival.

Eles apontam para suas universidades, seus centros de pesquisa, museus, o Congresso e eles chamam a isso luxúrias, tomadas por justas por uma população ingrata. Eles perguntam por quanto tempo essas coisas poderiam sem a força da Alta Guarda para assegurar sua sobrevivência.

Talvez tivesse sido um erro da Alta Guarda, manter uma espécie de "tutela" sobre os diversos povos, sem permitir que eles desenvolvessem seus próprios meios de defesa. Assim, quando se apresentava uma situação de extrema emergência - como um ataque Magog, por exemplo - povos inteiros acabavam massacrados como ovelhas em um matadouro, sem ter como se defender da invasão.

I am here to tell you that both of these arguments are misguided, that there is another way. There is a middle path, a road we must take that can preserve the noble tradition of the High Guard as an instrument of peace and maintain the security and stability of the liberties System Commonwealth citizens have enjoyed for 10,000 years. It is a hard road, fraught with change and peril, but at the end of that road we can leave the Systems Commonwealth better and stronger than we found it. We can make it a finer place.

As is usual, these grand pronouncements are more easily articulated than implemented. And I am sure you are asking yourselves: How do you propose to get us on that road, lead us down it, bring us to this happy future? I answer your question with a pearl of great price - an insight so pure, so fundamental that it forms the core of every great victory and every bitter defeat.

Eu estou aqui para lhes dizer que ambos os argumentos são equivocados, que existe uma outra maneira. Existe um caminho intermediário, uma estrada que devemos trilhar, que possa preservar a nobre tradição da Alta Guarda como um instrumento de paz e manter a segurança e estabilidade dos cidadãos livres da Comunidade dos Sistemas melhor e mais forte do que a encontramos. Podemos fazê-la um lugar mais agradável.

Como de costume, esses grandes pronunciamentos são mais facilmente articulados do que implementados. E eu tenho certeza que vocês estão se perguntando: como nos propõem essa estrada, lideram através dela, nos trazem esse futuro feliz? ... Eu respondo sua pergunta com uma pérola de grande preço - um interior tão puro, tão fundamental, que forma o centro de todas as grandes vitórias e todas as amargas derrotas.

Stark com certeza tinha o que costuma se chamar de "dom da oratória", e uma eloquência que levava todos a acreditarem em suas palavras. Ela falava com muita convicção e segurança, e também com sabedoria ... seus sentimentos naquela época eram mesmo nobres. Porém o tempo passou, e como acontece quando temos muitas mentes inteligentes pensando e refletindo, e uma sequência de fatos incontestáveis, a credibilidade foi aos poucos perdendo sua força. Foi o princípio do que os Nietzscheans passaram a chamar de fraqueza. E a fraqueza é a mãe da ruína.

Concordo com você, Myriam. ela amava a Comunidade, mas não soube lidar com as mudanças dramáticas que ocorreram...contudo, suas intenções sempre foram de restaurar a ordem....usando de truculência.

Dylan Hunt was born on Tarn-Vedra (the planetary seat of government and homebase for the Commonwealth’s military and arms depots) to a genetically engineered high-gravity world shuttle pilot mother and his Paradine father, an employee of the Imperial park at the human district of Visharna-Tarn. As such, Dylan is half-genetically enhanced Vedran, half-human, and as such much stronger and durable than normal humans.
He was mentored by the legendary Admiral Stark for his service with the great Intergalactic Systems Commonwealth. He first served for two years as enlisted and then attended the High Guard Academy, graduating with honors. After a sting with the Argosy Spec-ops he either commanded or served onboard the Crimson Eclipse.
Dylan managed to stop the dictator Ferrin on the planet Mobius and was thereafter given command of the starship Andromeda (as captain). His old partner, the Nietzchean Gaheris Rhade was made his first officer. He dated Sarah Riley for several years, and they were about to get married, when Dylan was reported lost and presumed dead at the Battle of Hephaistos. That battle was part of a grand plan by the Nietzcheans to destroy the commonwealth and to instead install their own empire. Gaheris, siding with his native Nietzcheans, thus betrayed him, and Dylan was forced to kill him in self-defense, just as the ship got stuck near the event horizon of a black hole, thus experiencing severe time dilation. The Commonwealth was destroyed that day and a long period of decay of the empire would follow.

Thus, Dylan as the only crewmember got stuck in time for 303 years until a salvage operation was attempted by the Eureka Maru. Unstuck in time, Dylan Hunt managed to convince the boarding crewmembers to become his new crew on the Andromeda Ascendant and, as the old Commonwealth had fallen the day he got stuck in time, he made it his great mission to restore it! The Nietzcheans had fallen to infighting and also failed to carve their great empire, now composing of many different fractions. An emergent threat was found with the cannibalistic and barbaric Magog.
With the crew being reduced from the former 4000 down to a mere six in total he got to know each and every one of them to a great extent; the humans Beka Valentine & Seamus Zelasny Harper, the alien Trance Gemini, the Nietzchean Tyr Anasazi, the Magog Rev Bem and the ship’s avatar Rommie. They would serve as his guides in this new time, and his mission would be his anchor in a lost existence. Facing a post-apocalyptic “dark age”, major threats by the ever-expanding and horrible Magog (who had even for a while dominated the Earth, leading to a great downfall from grace, while he was gone), inter-dimensional aliens and multiple other threats, including Nietzcheans, they eventually managed to restore the Commonwealth into a new organization encompassing around fifty planets - much, much smaller than the original Commonwealth, but no small feat nevertheless.
Eventually, Tyr would also betray him, Rev Bem would ascend to humanoid form and leave them, and he would be accompanied by two new crewmembers: the Nietzchean Telemachus Rhade and Doyle, the android. When he later learned that his father had been a Paradine, who are a human-like off-shot of the Vedrans, he gained access to new abilities (not featured in this writeup). The quest to improve the universe and conditions for living for everyone through diplomacy would ever continue!
Description
Dylan Hunt is a male with astonishing physique and good health. Even Nietzcheans respect him, and they never respect the inferior human race (then again Dylan is only half-human, but few know this). He is usually relaxed in a Commonwealth uniform, radiating a positive, confident, sympathetic and strong attitude. His voice is quite deep and commanding.
Personality
Dylan Hunt is a true idealist and a hero of old, lost times. He was taught to do good at all times, particularly when there is evil all around. While out of place at times in the future where he has landed, he nevertheless adjusts quickly to his surroundings, never being confused, afraid or unknowing for long. He also has very formidable survival instincts.

Dylan is ever the diplomat and it’s very fitting that he should be the one to restore the Commonwealth. While having quite the democratic leadership style, taking advice from fellow crewmates, he sometimes decidedly pulls ranks when the course is set. While offered leading roles in the New Commonwealth he declined as he believes he can do most out on the frontier, and he is right at that as his adventures have proven.
When forced to kill he compromises his own principles (therefore he often prefers to use Bashing Combat with his Martial Arts and Schtick). He often teams up with Tyr Anasazi in the field in sort of a friendly combat rivalry, but he doesn’t fully trust Tyr which is justified. He therefore keeps the corpse of Drago Museveni locked in cargo bay, as then Nietzcheans don’t dare attack his ship and Tyr cannot readily betray him and leave.
In general, women like him, and he does get all the best babes. Sadly, he lost his great love, Sarah, in the past. He is a natural friend of Beka Valentine and he also enjoys the quirky company of Trance Gemini. Seamus Harper is regarded by him as the fun, nerdy kid on the block. Dylan welcomed Rev Bem’s philosophical insights and pacifist agenda, despite him being a Magog. Rommie, the ship’s A.I. is one of his most valued friends and advisers. He respects the skills, dedication and abilities of Telemachus Rhade, the genetic incarnation of his former traitorous Nietzchean lieutenant, but isn’t entirely sure that he can be trusted either.
With this team, Dylan has managed to combine severely different personalities, differing agendas and people of very different backgrounds and of different skills into a superb and capable crew - which even managed to restore the Commonwealth to some degree and stand for a force of good in the universe - a true testimony to his great leadership abilities!

As for ANDROMEDA, I am a huge Gene Roddenberry fan. I've probably seen every episode of the original STAR TREK series 50 times.
So now you know how I spent my high school and college years. Hehe.
But to be IN that role, of Captain Dylan Hunt, and realize that it was the first captain EVER created after Captain Kirk - I was honored.
And have since become very good friends with Bill Shatner.

Dylan Hunt is a very different hero from the stereotypes of science fiction plots ... for starters, despite of his name he was not born on Earth. And neither is it a pure human. That, at the beginning, made me admire him as a character. The plot does not take place on Earth - to be more exact, Earth is little or nothing mentioned throughout the series, and it even has been destroyed (had become an inhospitable world and dominated by a Nietzschean faction).
But despite this seemingly tragic end, there is an implied detail: the planet Earth had been a Member of the Community Systems, and many of the humanoid races then spread across the Known Worlds were of human origin, with Terran genetic load. Earth scientists had been renowned masters in genetic engineering, and had developed "lines" of the strongest human, which in their turn contributed to the formation of numerous other races by outer space. So in this sense, the Terrans have become "immortal".

Dylan Hunt é um herói bem diferente dos estereótipos das tramas de ficção-científica ... para começar, apesar do nome bem "terráqueo", ele nem é nascido na Terra. E nem tampouco é humano puro. Foi isso, no início, que me fez admirá-lo como personagem. A trama não se passa na Terra - para ser mais exata, a Terra é pouco ou quase nada mencionada em toda a série, e chega mesmo a ser destruída (tinha se tornado um mundo inóspito e dominado por uma facção Nietzschean).

Mas, apesar desse fim aparentemente trágico, há ali um detalhe subentendido: a Terra tinha sido planeta-membro da Comunidade dos Sistemas, e muitas das raças humanóides então espalhadas pelos Mundos Conhecidos eram de origem humana, com carga genética terráquea. Cientistas da Terra tinham sido renomados mestres em engenharia genética, e haviam desenvolvido "linhagens" de humanos mais fortes, que por sua vez contribuíram para a formação de inúmeras outras raças pelo espaço afora. Assim, neste sentido, os terráqueos se tornaram "imortais".
